A brief history of the journal
Matemáticas: Enseñanza Universitaria was founded in 1977 by Professor Yu Takeuchi of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. By that time, the Journal began a successful activity, publishing over 42 issues that reached the whole Colombian mathematical community. However, due to the lack of financial support the journal went out of circulation in 1987. The corporation ERM acquired the rights of publication and started a new series of Matemáticas: Enseñanza Universitaria (Nueva Serie) in 1990.
Yu Takeuchi (U. Nacional)
In the mean time the journal has modified its editorial policy according to the new developments of the mathematics in Colombia. While the first issues of the Journal were addressed to Colombian teachers with little knowledge of modern mathematics, the new serie is more aimed to young researchers and professional mathematicians of all Latin American countries.
Professor Takeuchi was born in 1927 in
Tokio. He obtained the degree of Scientist, with specialty in
theoretical physics in the Imperial University of Tokio. In 1959
Professor Takeuchi accepted an appointment from Japan's foreign office
to visit the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, where he later
decided to accept a permanent position, developing a successful career
as mathematician and educator. Professor Takeuchi influence in the
Colombian mathematical community has been enormous. Several generations
of researchers grew up and continue growing under his inspiration and
advice. Professor Takeuchi retired from Universidad Nacional de
Colombia in 1987 but he is still a very active mathematician and has
not given up teaching or research. Prof. Takeuchi publications include
numerous papers and books. His latest book, "Sucesiones recurrentes",
was published by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2005.
